How a Gift Certificate Became the Start of a Decades-long Journey with JN Bank
In November 1996, when Judie O’Sullivan and her newlywed husband received a wedding gift of a JN Bank gift certificate loaded with British pound sterling, it seemed like a simple gesture to celebrate the beginning of their married life. But the foreign currency would set in motion another relationship for her; one that has grown from a single banking transaction to a lifelong connection.
Mrs O’Sullivan, a St Andrew native, met her husband at church when he visited from another parish and before long, they were engaged, got married and took a leap of faith to settle in Ocho Rios to begin their life as husband and wife.
A few months following their honeymoon in early 1997, Mrs O’Sullivan visited the newly opened JN Bank Ocho Rios branch to establish a pound sterling savings account to deposit the proceeds of the wedding gift certificate. Nearly three decades later, that first account has grown into a much broader financial relationship, with JN Bank accompanying her and her family through some of the most important and challenging chapters of their lives.
Over the years, she has used JN to grow her savings in multiple currencies, holding accounts also in Jamaican, US and Canadian dollars. She has also financed her home through JN mortgages, secured motor vehicles through the institution and, soon, expects to add a JN Bank credit card to the suite of financial services she uses.
But what motivates her to continue her relationship with the bank?
“I like the spirit of JN,” was her simple answer. “I also like Earl Jarrett [chief executive officer of the JN Group], how he looks after people and how he does business,” she shared.
Mrs O’Sullivan said the relationship is about more than the assets and objectives she has acquired and achieved through their financial products. It is about having a financial partner that has been present and understanding as her needs changed, including overcoming a trying time when her husband left his job while they still had a mortgage and other obligations to take care of.
“It is a great feeling to know that I can lay down and look at my own roof and I thank JN for that,” she said. “When we were getting the house, I almost gave up because, shortly afterwards, my husband resigned from his job and the salary we were relying on to pay the loan was reduced. But JN worked with us and encouraged me to keep going with just my salary and I never looked back.”
Mrs O’Sullivan’s journey with JN has also extended to her son, now 20-years old. As she built her financial life with JN, she also established his relationship with the institution, positioning him to later access financial services, support and opportunities to pursue his development and goals.
“From my son was one year old I opened his savings account with JN Bank. He graduated from Kingston College in 2023, and I handed him his JN Bank card. That summer when others were using their parents’ cards for summer jobs, he could have given his account details to his employer right away, because it was long established,” she shared.
For Mrs O’Sullivan, the JN gift certificate she received almost 30 years ago was itself a matchmaker. She said she has accessed services from other financial institutions over the years, but none has allowed her to own her journey like JN.
“Until death do us part,” she stressed. “I will never move because JN is the best thing that has happened to Jamaica. JN has been there through so many stages of my life, and you can always find a solution to fit your needs.”
Outside of her banking relationship with JN Bank, Mrs O’Sullivan, who currently works in the tourism sector, is also an active member of the JN Circle Ocho Rios Chapter, managed by the JN Foundation, helping the JN Group to support growth and development in communities in St Ann.
“I have been with the JN Circle for more than 10 years and it is something that is very good for the communities. I see where we have impacted the lives of many, including children in homes, and in the schools, helping them with the development of their people skills and how they learn,” she said.
As the JN Group celebrates 152 years in 2026 of helping people to find their way, Mrs O’Sullivan’s wish for the organisation and JN Bank, which she has trusted for decades, is “every blessing from the Lord Jesus Christ and every good thing.”
