Keeping children entertained all summer can feel like a full-time job, especially if you are still juggling real work, errands, and a million other responsibilities.

However, with a little planning and creativity, you can keep them engaged and happy, while making the break enjoyable for you too. Here are some ways to make the most of the summer break for both you and your kids.

1. Teach a New Skill

Summer break is the perfect opportunity to introduce your childโ€” or childrenโ€” to new and exciting skills. Whether itโ€™s cooking, gardening, learning a musical instrument, or even getting behind the wheel, the options are endless! For teens, learning to drive is a valuable life skill that boosts confidence and independence. If they are at least 17, to obtain a provisional driverโ€™s license, consider enrolling them in a certified programme to ensure they learn safely and effectively.

2. Get Them Involved in Community Activities

With the constant pull of screens and social media, itโ€™s easy for kids to spend hours glued to their devices. Many local churches, youth groups, and community centres, however, still have summer programmes, sports days, and outreach projects ongoing. Encourage your children to volunteer or participate in community activities, which can help them build their social skills and develop a sense of responsibility.

3. Help Them Gain Work Experience

Summer is the perfect time for teenagers and young adults to gain valuable work experience, and a lot of employers usually offer internships and summer work to give them hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world job exposure. These initiatives help young people to boost their rรฉsumรฉs and to develop essential skills, such as teamwork, time management, and responsibility. Keep an eye out for job postings and encourage them to apply. Thereโ€™s usually a stipend attached to these offers, which can also be a great motivator for the children, teaching them independence and financial responsibility.

4. Plan Family Fun Days and Explore Outdoors

Quality time with family is important. Take beach trips, host game nights, or attend cultural events together. Whether itโ€™s a trip to the National Stadium for the annual Independence Day Grand Gala in August or just a scenic drive to your nearest fast food restaurant, spending time together strengthens family bonds and keeps children entertained.

5. Encourage Reading and Creative Writing

Summer is the perfect time to spark a love for books and storytelling in your child or children. This year, you can consider taking them aboard the Logos Hope Book Ship, which is currently docked in Kingstonโ€™s Cement Coal Pier until August 19, 2025. Youโ€™ll have access to over 5,000 titles, childrenโ€™s books, novels, non-fiction, all at affordable prices.

You can also encourage your child to write creatively during the summer. They could start a summer reading journal, where they note favourite books or new words. Challenge them to write short stories or poems inspired by something they saw or read aboard. Set aside time to also analyse that story or poem with them, then discuss themes, characters, and plot twists to keep their minds active and curious.

6. Set Up Fun DIY Projects at Home

Set up fun DIY projects at home, like tie-dyeing old t-shirts or making homemade ice cream, among other things to spark creativity while keeping your children engaged. Encourage them to use their imagination to craft unique pieces that can also be used as thoughtful gifts or vibrant home decorations.

7. Enrol Them in a Summer Camp/Programme

You may still find camps and programmes running early to mid-August for kids, offering sports, adventure, creative, leadership, and tech programming. Whether your child loves football, wants to explore coding, or thrives in nature-based or faith-based activities, there may be something just right for them.

Keep an eye on local event listings, school bulletins, community groups and youth organisations’ social media pages. A little research can uncover last-minute openings or even free or low-cost options. Ask around too. Word of mouth is also a great way to discover hidden gems.

Remember: The summer holidays do not have to be stressful, boring or expensive. By blending fun activities with educational experiences, you can keep children engaged and help them make the most of their break. With so many options to explore, you donโ€™t have to make decisions alone either. Have a conversation with your children and find out what activities theyโ€™re excited about while theyโ€™re away from school.
