Extended to January 19

The deadline for entries in the JN Small Business Loans (JNSBL) Barber and Beauty Challenge has been extended to January 19, 2015. The original deadline date was January 12; however, this date has been revised based on the large number of queries being received about the competition.

Mr. Jason McNeish, chairman of the Planning Committee for the JNSBL Barber & Beauty Challenge 2015, said that โ€œBarbers and hairdressers have been asking about the competition and are interested in entering; therefore, we agreed to facilitate them by adjusting the deadline for entriesโ€œ

The idea to stage the challenge competition emerged from a suggestion by JNBS General Manager, Earl Jarrett, who said that during a conversation with his barber, he suggested that barbers and hairdressers needed an opportunity to showcase their craft.

โ€œBased on research, we also realised that there are many barbers and hairdressers who want to expand their operations but are unaware that the JNSBL can assist them. We, therefore, hope that this competition will give them a context not only showcase their skills; but, also increase awareness about JNSBL among other small business operators,โ€ Mr. McNeish said.

At present, there are approximately 7,000 to 8,000 persons who are barbers and hairdressers, based on an estimate from the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development in 2005, when the Public Health (Barbers and Barbershops), and the Public Health (Hair-dressers, Beauty Therapists, Spas, Cosmetologists and Beauty Salons) Regulations 2004 were enacted. The Ministry indicated that this number is larger than suggested since some barbers and hairdressers are unregistered.

โ€œWe believe that this will be an opportunity for many to both formalize their operations; and to familiarize themselves with the Public Health Regulations 2004, as one of the requirements to enter the competition is that they need to submit their licence from the Parish Council or KSAC,โ€ stated Mr. McNeish.

To enter the JNSBL Barber and Beauty Challenge, barbers and hairdressers are invited to submit the โ€œbest before and after,โ€ photographs of their work. The entry should be accompanied by the name, contact number and copy of licence; as well as, location of the operation.

The top 50 entrants, 25 barbers and 25 hairdressers, will then move on to the second round of the competition in which members of the public will be invited to โ€œlikeโ€ the work of the competitors on Facebook.

The voting on social media begins on January 24, 2015 and ends on January 31, 2015. At that point, the top 12 persons, six barbers and six hairdressers, will move on to the finals where they will be given challenges from which the top three persons from each category will be selected.

The winner of each category will receive $500,000 with the first and second runners up receiving $300,000 and $100,000, respectively.

All entries must be sent to JNchallenge@jnbs.com by January 19, 2015.
